The most dark and serious of the Nintendo 3D Zelda games, Twilight Princess pushes the limits of graphics to the final limits on the Wii's hardware. It's more unnerving and murky than The Wind Waker, with no bug-eyed pig guards or effeminate pirates.

Link is attracted to a parallel dimension referred to as Twilight Realm where he takes the form of a Hylian wolf and the form of a Hylian while being guided by Midna.

Gameplay

The thirteenth installment of The Legend of Zelda is Twilight Princess. It was released in 2006 for the Nintendo GameCube system and Wii. Critics praised the game, giving it perfect scores in various publications including 1UP CVG EGM and GamesRadar. Many consider it to be the best game in the franchise and the most viewed Zelda game on the PAL market.

Twilight princess has a stylized and naturalistic graphics style, similar to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, with a much more advanced graphic engine. It is the first game in the series to have an entirely directional motion control scheme, instead of a fixed view like the previous games. This modification was made to accommodate the Wii console, which features an interface based on pointing. The GameCube version comes with a section at the back of the game with mirror-image maps, which are for those who prefer an image that is fixed.

Upon entering the Twilight Realm, Link is transformed into a wolf and meets Midna, a mysterious creature. She reveals to Link that the kingdom of Hyrule is now under the control of a group shadow beasts that are led by the evil sorcerer Zant. She also explains that she is the true ruler of Twili, but was usurped and cursed to her current form by Zant.

A short cutscene shows the soldiers being killed by shadow beasts when Link and Midna arrive at Hyrule Castle. Then, Link and Midna escape from the castle through a tunnel, and enter the Twilight Realm.

Link can move more freely around the world in the Twilight Realm by using his Wolf form. He can also use senses to navigate the world. He can sense the ghosts of soldiers and animals in the distance. He can also pick grass from specific patches and whistle with it to summon an animal, for instance a Hawk or Epona. Link can also whistle near the patches to summon a similar animal.

As with earlier Zelda games, music plays a large part in Twilight Princess. Link can play an instrument that is musical, such as the flute or the harp, to draw and call upon various animals. Link can also use his voice to command the wolf's form. He can also use his compass as a guide to help him navigate through the world.

Characters

The Legend of Zelda series is filled with colorful characters that leave a lasting impression on players. These quirky and unique characters such as hands emerging from toilets to pirates sailing across vast oceans, are the core of this game. Twilight Princess continues the tradition of previous games by introducing a range of memorable characters.

She is friends with Link and tells him about her experience in the twilight, and how she defeated Zant the King of Twilight.

Zant who is the other half of the Triforce of Wisdom, is a wicked sorcerer and ruler of the Twilight Realm. He was removed to the Twilight Realm by the goddesses for encroaching on their land and enslaving the people. Zant's magic keeps him permanently in wolf form, however Midna eliminates the power and allows him to transform into his human form when needed.

Epona is a better horse that can be used in both Wolf and Hylian forms. Link can whistle at specific grass patches to summon the animal. (similar to Majora’s Mask). The player can identify the horse and customize the horse, making Twilight Princess the first time in the series where the player can personalize their own horse.

Theme

Music is a crucial element of any Zelda title. It can make a game seem epic exciting, expansive, and captivating. Twilight Princess' soundtrack is often criticized for being inconsistent and sporadic, which doesn't capture certain emotional moments. Contrastingly, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are enthralling soundtracks that bloom at the right time to create a sense of grandness and eerie.

Toru Minegishi and Asuka Ohta were the composers for the music and sound design in Twilight Princess, with Koji Kondo as the composer in charge for the first time since Wind Waker. The soundtrack to Twilight Princess is a radical departure from the usual approach to the show, with a an approach that is minimalist to melody and arrangement. Most field and dungeon music begins with a single instrumental that creates a mystical and atmospheric ambiance for the player. For instance, the eerie music in Midna's Lament utilizes the piano to create an overwhelming feeling of sadness for the player.

The most popular examples are dungeon themes, that have a dark and sombre atmosphere. This is most evident in Twilight Realm, which has an eerie soundscape that is reminiscent of scenes in a David Lynch movie. The dark and unsettling quality of this track is accentuated by the absence of recognizable melodies and traditional arrangement, with dreary drones and peculiar patterns intertwining to create a bleak texture.

A more joyful and uplifting song is Link's hometown, "Faron Woods." The song makes use of various soft sounds and stringed instruments to evoke an idyllic feeling of security and peace for the player. The song also has subtle references to the franchise's most infamous scene, since it has a riff that is very similar to the iconic tune that plays at the beginning of Ocarina of Time.

Twilight Princess also has dynamic songs that change according to the player's whereabouts, what they are doing and what's taking place. For instance the Hyrule Castle Town theme has distinct versions for each area of the town and Central Square being the most popular. Central Square having a more energetic and full version of the song. These variations add a wonderful addition to the world of Hyrule and add a sense of deepness and immersion.

Story

Link's mission in Twilight Princess is to save Hyrule from the corrupted parallel world known as the Twilight Realm. To accomplish this, Link adopts the forms of an Hylian, as well as a Wolf and is assisted by a woman called Midna.

Midna was the first ruler of Twili but she was supplanted and cursed by Zant into her imp form. Link and Midna are told by the Ancient Sages that only defeating Ganondorf will be able to free them from their curse. The Sages reveal that the Mirror of Twilight causes the darkness to dwell in the Twilight Realm. Midna and Link travel to the Spirit's Spring, where they encounter hostile monsters that kidnap children. Using Wolf Link's keen sense of smell, they follow the kids' scent to a bridge, and then move into the Twilight Realm.



They enter the Forest Temple and battle Diababa, obtaining the first Fused Shadow. Faron then informs them of the next destination, which is the Eldin Province in the west (Wii) or the east (GCN).

Midna, at the Lakebed Temple of Lanayru teleports Link to a fiery stone and uses her powers on the ice beneath Lake Hylia. The spirit of the recently deceased Zora Queen, Rutela, then appears and tells Link that he must visit the Lakebed Temple in order to gain access to a treasure from the Zora.

Twilight Princess allows you to ride Epona the horse from Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. Contrary to the name of the set used in the two previous games, Link can now decide the name of the horse himself.

Midna and Link can recover the remaining Mirror Shards once they arrive in the Twilight Realm. The Sages inform Midna that she is the real ruler of the Twili. She was a pawn by the monarchy and had turned to an ego-driven god. The Sages also inform them that the only way to defeat Ganondorf is to bring him back to the light and break the alliance between the Twilight and Hyrule kingdoms.
